Response to Intervention (RTI):
The students are formally assessed 3 times per year; September, January, and May. We also monitor student progress in between these formal assessments times to make sure they are progressing or to modify intervention groups. The testing used is called DIBELs (Dynamic Indicators of Basic Early Learning Skills). These subtests measure decoding and encoding skills, fluency, and comprehension. After analyzing data with grade level RTI teams which include classroom teachers and special education teachers, we compile flexible intervention groups according to the results. We meet throughout the year to check in and modify groups to meet the individual needs of each student.
Reading Small Group Curriculum:
Intervention groups meet 2 times per week for 45 minutes. Small groups are made according to the individual needs of the students after analyzing their assessment data and conferring with the RtI team. The groups are small, usually 3-5 students. During this intervention time we may work on phonics pulling from the Fundations Phonics program as well as some Wilson Reading System techniques and word study. Students will also practice their word level skills using the Lexia Core 5 online program. We also work on fluency using Quick Reads or Read Naturally both research based fluency programs.
Lastly, comprehension groups focus on strategies to improve comprehension;
Making Connections
Sensory Images
Monitoring for Meaning
Asking Questions
Inferring
Determining Importance
Summarizing
Synthesizing
In comprehension groups we also work on developing test taking skills in preparation for the Reading Comprehension portion of the ELA MCAS.
