Second Grade Update
Math
Reading/Writing
Unit 2 of Bridges Curriculum sets conceptual foundations for multidigit addition and subtraction, as well as linear measurement, with a particular focus on developing robust understandings of the number line. The unit opens with counting collections of discrete objects, but quickly transitions to a linear view of numbers as students link multiple trains of 10 together to measure length, construct and use measuring strips, represent whole numbers as lengths on a number line and generate strategies for adding and subtracting within 100.
October Number Corner: the focus is reviewing combinations of 10 and related subtraction combinations. Students also continue to read, write, compare and compute with 2- and 3- digit numbers.
November Number Corner:
Students review telling time to the hour and half hour and learn to tell time to the quarter hour, on analog and digital clocks. We will also focus on length measurement and students review doubles and near doubles facts as well as related subtraction combinations. We will continue to explore arrays!
The Launching Unit in the Grade 2 Empowering Writers curriculum introduces students to the foundations of good writing and helps establish classroom writing routines. Students learn that all writing has a purpose and audience, and they explore the difference between narrative, informational, and opinion writing. The unit focuses on generating ideas, organizing thoughts, and expanding sentences using strong details and vocabulary. Through modeled lessons and shared writing, students build confidence and develop an understanding of what makes writing clear and interesting.
During Independent Reading Time, we practice reading “just right” books that match our reading level. This helps us build stamina and focus so we can read for longer periods of time. We also work on using strategies to understand what we read and become stronger, more confident readers.
Science
Fundations
The FOSS Pebbles, Sand, and Silt unit introduces second graders to earth materials through hands-on exploration of rocks and soil. Students observe, compare, and sort different types of rocks by size, shape, texture, and color. They investigate how larger rocks break down into smaller particles like gravel, sand, and silt, and learn how water and wind contribute to this process. Students also explore erosion, discovering how moving water and wind can wear away and transport earth materials from one place to another. Through activities with screening, settling, and sorting, students discover patterns in how earth materials behave and learn that rocks and soils are natural resources with many everyday uses.
In Fundations 3, 4, and 5, students deepen their understanding of phonics, spelling, and word structure. Unit 3 students learn about closed syllable exceptions such as ild, ind, old, olt, and ost, and continue building fluency and accuracy in both reading and spelling. Unit 4 will focus on closed syllables, spelling rules for base words with suffixes -s, -es, -ed, and -ing, and reading multisyllabic words. In Unit 5 we will review and practice how to read and spell multisyllabic words. Unit 5 also focuses on the suffixes: -less,-ness,-ful,-ment,-able,-ish,and -en. The students will review categorizing suffixes as vowel suffixes or consonant suffixes. Vowel suffixes begin with vowels and consonant suffixes begin with consonants.
