Keeping Your Cells Safe
The heart pumps blood throughout your body with the purpose of keeping your cells alive. Red blood cells transport oxygen inhaled from the lungs to your cells, and plasma transports the vital nutrients that your cells need to survive. White blood cells further protect your cells by transporting antibodies to infected cells to fight back against illness
Transporting Hormones
Hormones are secreted by glands in the endocrine system, which are then transported through the bloodstream. Once the hormones have reached their intended destination they bind to a cell to instruct it to perform an action.
An example of hormone usage is seen in blood sugar management; The process begins with the production of a hormone called insulin from the pancreas when high blood sugar is detected. These hormones are then transported through the blood stream to insulin receptors in either muscle tissue or the liver. This then signals glucose transporters to surface and take in the excess glucose from the bloodstream and transfer it to the cells, in turn lowering your blood sugar.
