In grades 5-8, your child will be using the Go Math! program by Houghton Mifflin Harcourt. It is developed to embrace the Common Core State Standards and Mathematical Practices. The fifth grade series has 11 chapters that will stretch your child's mathematical thinking. Every lesson can be differentiated to address the needs of any student. The Go Math! program incorporates the best teaching practices by having your child learn the skill, apply their learning through problem solving, explain their reasoning, make connections, communicate their thinking, and provide multiple representations of a solution.
A big change from previous years will be vocabulary development. The beginning of each chapter introduces the vocabulary for the unit and provides flashcards. Students are expected to learn and use these vocabulary words in their written and oral responses.
Another difference in the Go Math! program is the Real World problem solving in daily lessons. Students learn how to use models, representations, and mixed strategies to help them solve real life application problems. Additionally, there are Go Deeper and Think Smarter problems designed to challenge even the strongest math student
