Keynote Speaker

Jennie Misong Magiera: mother, educator, technology advocate, student advocate

Jennie Magiera is the author of Courageous Edventures and the founder and president of the non-profit organization, Our Voice Alliance, whose mission is to elevate marginalized voices and perspectives to improve equity & empathy in education. Previously, she was the Chief Innovation Officer for the Des Plaines Public School District 62, the Digital Learning Coordinator for the Academy for Urban School Leadership and a Chicago Public Schools teacher. Jennie uses her classroom experiences to inform her work supporting educators to create new and better opportunities for their students. She believes that despite the many challenges facing schools today, every classroom can be a place for “edventures”: student-centered, passion-based experiential learning. Her work centers around acknowledging problems and finding innovative ways to navigate them so as to allow teachers and students dive into these classroom edventures.

Classic Session -- Following Keynote

“Moving Beyond Genius Hour: All day choice and voice ”

Genius Hour and 20% time are great ways to give students the opportunity to make choices in their learning, but how can you make student agency more ubiquitous throughout your school day? How do you move beyond student choice “time” and make every minute student choice time? From ideas to get you started to planning time to make this a reality, this session will allow you to redesign your own classroom around student empowerment.

Engagement

How can you use technology to employ these actions in your classroom?

Teachers and students in our district have access to the most powerful tools ever available to learners and educators. These tools can help us step beyond the limitations of time, space, location and ability level. If we learn to leverage technology meaningfully, the tools will allow us to entirely eliminate these barriers and offer new opportunities to both students and staff.

The question for educators:

How will you use technology to offer your students opportunities for greater engagement?

Conference Format

The One Conference is organized in a format that encourages exposure to new ideas while offering time, support, and resources to explore those new ideas.

Learn from colleagues that are already finding success using these practices with students.

New this year, The Modern Session! Similar to an UnConference or EdCamp, these sessions will allow us to have powerful discussions on our classroom practices and needs and learn from the collective knowledge of the group. Meet new colleagues and expand your ideas and resources. We are more powerful when we work together!

Food Choices

Please indicate your lunch plans in Sched. Lunches will be $5. Stay for lunch and network with fellow district staff!

Ham & Swiss sandwich or wrap , Turkey & Cheddar sandwich or wrap, 2 salad options of Vegetarian Baja or Chef; each includes a chip bag, cookie, and water.

NEW! The Modern Session!

Modern Session...

Every day educators have access to and interact with a wide variety of digital tools within our district. Here is a chance to interact with some of the business partners who make these tools. Business partners are asked to aim at educating end users, building stronger relationships with staff members, and developing a trusting, open relationship that makes these tools more valuable to our teaching and learning. Stop in and ask the questions you need to ask to put these tools to more meaningful use in your classroom.
