Per the WCSD Band Handbook:
There may be times when a student desires to change their instrument of study. Students are welcome to do so, but should acknowledge that quality time practicing with the new instrument is necessary in order for the student to achieve success with their grade level Band ensemble. It is common for students to consider changing instruments to avoid a perceived challenge with their current instrument - but all instruments have challenges. The implications of changing and instrument should be seriously considered and discussed with the Band director before pursued.
A student may follow one of several pathways to change their instrument:
Continue to play their current instrument in curricular Band, make make arrangements to take lessons on their instrument with either their Band director or a private instructor.
Discontinue their current instrument, unenroll from curricular Band class at a semester break, and make arrangements to take lessons on their instrument with either their Band director or a private instructor in the following semester.
Discontinue their current instrument and enroll in Band Basics rather than curricular Band (6th & 7th Grades only).
After a semester of experience on the new instrument, the student may complete a proficiency playing exam for the Band director to demonstrate that they are able to perform at the same level as the majority of students in their section. The Band director may advise additional lessons are needed.
Playing an instrument is personal and individual experience. Exceptions may occur at the discretion of the Band director.
