ABOUT
ABOUT
National Honor Society (NHS) membership has been the true mark of student achievement for over 100 years, but it goes far beyond a report card. By empowering, championing, and recognizing well-rounded students, NHS provides schools with a values-based framework to elevate a culture of scholarship, service, leadership, and character.
NHS chapters operate in all 50 states and many schools around the world, engaging and serving more than one million students. Each year, the average NHS chapter contributes:
1,000 hours of school/community service
$26,000 in charitable donations
1,000 pounds of food to local, state, and national causes
100 pints of blood
Reflecting school leaders’ profound commitment to student leadership development, the National Association of Secondary School Principals (NASSP) founded NHS in 1921 based on the four pillars of scholarship, service, leadership, and character. In addition to NHS, NASSP founded and manages National Junior Honor Society (est. in 1928), National Student Council (est. in 1931), and National Elementary Honor Society (est. in 2008).
Scholarship is a commitment to learning. Members of NHS are allowed to submit an application if they hold a 3.5 or higher cumulative GPA in their junior year. They are expected to maintain this GPA through their Senior year.
Members of the National Honor Society voluntarily contribute to their school and community, without monetary compensation and with a positive, courteous, and enthusiastic spirit. NHS Members are willing to work for the benefit of those in need, and they are committed to volunteering their time. NHS Members are required to volunteer for 12 hours in their senior year to graduate with the NHS stoll.
Members of the National Honor Society are leaders. They are resourceful. They solve problems and promote school activities. They contribute ideas, they are dependable, and they exemplify positive attitudes about life. In taking initiative both in and outside of the classroom, a leader strives to train and help others reach their common goals of success. A leader will go forward when others hesitate.
Members of the National Honor Society uphold the principles of morality and ethics. They are cooperative, they demonstrate high standards of honesty and reliability. They show courtesy, concern, and respect for others. They are trustworthy, punctual, fair, and caring. They strive to make the right choices.
