I AGREE TO:
Commit to a week of service as part of a team, prioritizing the needs of the team above my own (even when it conflicts with my own knowledge and priorities) and understanding that this is not a week of sightseeing, but rather a week of work. Parents who are traveling with their child are not participating solely in support of their child, but rather in support of the whole team.
Remember that I have signed up to spend a week with upper and middle school students. As such, there is to be no consumption of alcohol or drugs at any point during the trip.
Acknowledge the cultural differences and the expertise of our Dominican and Haitian hosts and that we are guests and there to serve. I will be a servant not a consultant. I will deepen my understanding of service learning; recognizing that Watkinson’s primary service is to our friends at the Good Samaritan Hospital and the Iglesia Bautista Mission House, and secondarily we are there to serve our friends in the bateys, barrios, and local schools.
Respect and abide by all of the norms established by our hosts and Watkinson’s chaperones; this includes following the team’s itinerary, fully participating in group activities, adhering to the schedule, and supporting the safety and work structures
Adult travelers do not have authority over students, if students ask you to make a decision, refer them to a chaperone. Adult travelers should not make a decision or contradict a decision that’s already been made. Being part of the adult community that reinforces decisions is helpful. Adults are expected to follow all directions in the same capacity as students; your leadership role is modeling following directions for our students
Share all my constructive ideas with the chaperones. Should conflicts arise, they need to be resolved with the chaperons in private conversations that preserve team morale.
