Distance Learning "Live Instruction" Guidelines

Safety is paramount to Watertown Public Schools, including in our virtual world. The guidelines below are based on recommendations from the Connecticut State Department of Education (CSDE) regarding confidentiality and privacy, along with existing district policies and many thoughtful conversations with colleagues in the area to develop the following guidelines.

I understand that my child may participate in instructional sessions utilizing live audio and/or video instruction and support, which may be provided on an individual and/or group basis. I understand that these online sessions are occurring for the sole purpose of providing my child with instruction. Live learning opportunities will take place during normal school hours and at the discretion and direction of Watertown Public Schools’ Staff. I also understand that I must adhere to, and ensure that my child adheres to, the following guidelines when participating in live virtual instruction:

  • Avoid use of private, individually identifiable information in group virtual settings

  • Follow the pertinent parts of Watertown Public Schools’ current Student Privacy policy

  • Utilize a quiet space with reasonable adult supervision as necessary

  • Adults - treat virtual learning as if it were a classroom observation at school, following the pertinent parts of the district policy for Visitor and Observations in School

  • Consider using headphones if you are in a room with others

  • Refrain from recording the virtual class session

  • Respect any guidelines put forth by the teacher

  • Be on time

  • Be respectful of the teacher and classmates, just as you would at school

  • Dress appropriately and consider what can be viewed by the camera around you

Furthermore, I understand that as my child participates in live virtual instruction, that it is my responsibility to respect the privacy and confidentiality of all students. I will not access, use, or disclose any confidential information of any student. I also agree that I will not record any portion of any live audio or video lesson. I understand that if I, or my child, does not adhere to these guidelines, that opportunities to participate in live virtual instruction may be suspended.

Finally, I understand that the goal of Watertown Public Schools is to meet students’ needs to the extent possible in these unprecedented times, and that these guidelines afford my child the opportunity for more diverse learning experiences while maintaining safety and privacy. I recognize that this document serves to provide informed consent of my child’s participation in live virtual instructions.

Please contact your child’s building administrator if you have concerns, or if you object to your child’s participation in live audio or video instructional learning opportunities.
