Take home reading

Here are strategies and questions to ask to support your child’s reading:

· Before reading- Look through the book before reading it. Talk about the pictures and make predictions.

· As your child reads and if he/ she gets stuck on a word, give him/her wait time to figure it out on their own. Your child can look at the picture for help or look at the first part of the word to help figure out the unknown word. Your child can also skip the word and read to the end of the sentence to see what word makes sense.

· After reading- Talk about the story. Ask: What happened in the story? What did you like in the story? What does the story remind you of?

A Ziploc bag has been provided to protect the book and book log. Please have an adult fill-in the enclosed book log each night and return to school each day along with your child’s book. I will check the reading log each day for a homework grade.
