Course Description: ENL is a program that is used throughout New York State to further development and/or teach English to students whose families are familiar with a language other than English. This does not always mean that the student can read, write, speak or understand another language, but that another language is present in their home. We are an enrichment program, not remediation. Our goal is to further enrich your child with the English language within the New York State learning standards and content curriculum.

Objectives: To serve as a bridge between the student's native language and English Language instruction. The ultimate objectives are to develop English language proficiency for our students, to provide support for our students' families, and to provide significant opportunities for our districts' communities to learn and grow from the cultural mosaic that is our district.

  • Students will become more fluent in English: Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking skills

  • Students will obtain/retain English vocabulary through practice and exposure to the English language.

Required Supplies: Chromebook, any materials supplied by the classroom teacher.

Grading Structure w/ Descriptions

All work is ungraded in an ENL classroom and we do not give a numerical grade. However, students will receive a participation grade/ comment based on their attendance and class involvement. Even though no grades are given, students are expected to take the New York State English as a Second Language Test in May. This is a required New York State exam that determines the students language proficiency and placement for the following year.

Policies and Procedures

  • The rules of the ESL classroom follow the individual rules of the students' classroom.
