At the age of 19, Paul Bäumer and his fellow schoolmates enlist in the Germany Army. While initially eager to fight for their country, they are soon exposed to the horrors of war. Former patriotism turns to desperation, following the deaths of former friends and comrades. These experiences, however, harden the soldiers. By war's end, they no longer resemble their past selves. As soldiers, how are they to blend into society and pretend the war never happened?
