The only fish on the Gulf of Maine that lives in the river and spawns in the ocean, instead of the other way around.
The oldest reported Blueback Herring is 8 years old, the heaviest weighs 200g (0.44 lbs).
At 6-8 inches long, Rainbow Smelt are the smallest of Maine's native sea-run fish. For this reason, they are often used as bait to catch Salmon, Trout, and Tuna.
Once in a saline environment , sea lampreys develop parasitic abilities, attach themselves to a fish and ingest their blood and skin.
Before the Industrial Revolution, sea-run brook trout lived from New York to Maine. Now, 90% of all sea-run brook trout (also known as salters) live in isolated Maine rivers.
Current dams restrict the Atlantic salmon to 8% of its traditional habitat, which has led to Maine being their last refuge.
The fish allowed back into Maine's waterways with river restoration will provide for fish-eating birds as well.
