School Board Vice Chair
How long have you been serving on the Board?
I am getting ready to start my 20th year. I am the longest serving board member. I took a couple of years off in the middle, but I started serving in 2000.
What motivated you to run for the Board of Education? What motivates you to serve today?
What motivated me was I wanted to make a difference in kids' lives, especially kids that came up from poor families. I wanted to be able to give them a voice. I am motivated to serve today to make lives better for kids and give them opportunities.
What is the most enjoyable part of working with your fellow Board members?
Being able to see the outcome of some of the things that we do! Building this new Valle Crucis school, the outcome of this and what it's gonna do for kids down the road: it's gonna give them a better education. And hopefully, it will make their lives better. And I love the camaraderie we have. We all get along great. We have a lot in common. And we look forward to seeing each other. A lot of boards don't get along at all and can't stand each other!
Tell me about your career prior to your time on the Board and, if applicable, now.
I grew up here. My family has been here for seven generations. I worked for 38 years at the ABC store, and now I'm retired and I work two days a week for the county Sanitation Department. Other than that, I do my School Board stuff. I enjoy being retired after all those years of work, knowing I don't have to go to town anymore. I just kind of do what I want to! If I want to go traveling, we can do that. It's really nice.
