The Watauga County Heritage Quilt was commissioned as part of the nationwide America 250 celebration to illustrate 250 years of Watauga County History. The 14-foot quilt, designed by Friends of The Watauga County Library, depicts Cherokee hunters, settlers, and modern day hikers taking on the sprawling mountains surrounding mountains.

The quilt arrived at the Watauga Media Center as part of its tour of schools in the county designed to educate students on the importance of their heritage and the story of the land they inhabit. But for some students, their heritage is traced to people or places far from the rolling mountains they now call home.

Watauga Students in Mrs. Lowe's AP Language and Composition class visited the quilt and wrote poems about their own heritage through talking about were their families came from, their ancestors, and the progression Watauga county history. Below are some of these students'work, accompanied by related images of the quilt.
