When tragedy struck The High Country in September of 2024, community members came together with one mission: to restore beauty from the broken. Exactly 7 months after Hurricane Helene tore through Boone, the community is still striving to restore its former beauty. Every week, clean up crews cut damaged trees, restore roads, and make progress.
As spring and summer roll around, many community members wonder how Boone will adapt to the damage that Helene induced to their town. Will the small town charm still prove itself relevant through its natural beauty after being destroyed? The town's resilience and perseverance has proven itself to be unwavering as the community works to build back the beauty. Natural landscapes still present the same charm, even through the midst of construction.
Some parts of the Parkway are still under construction, but crew members are working tirelessly to make the roads safe to explore for members of the community.
Even though the Parkway faced severe damage from Helene, the parts that are up and running are thriving in there annual spring beauty.
In the past month, state workers have started removal of fallen trees around the community. Tree and road work have been seen taking place in the Vilas community, an area heavily impacted by Helene.
King Street- Boone's downtown- was hit hard by Helene as well. Since then, community members have worked hard to build it back to its former glory.
The shrubbery of the Blue Ridge Parkway is in full bloom, despite the previous damage from Helene.
Despite the previous damage, King Street still shines in the beauty of it's local charm.
Located on the western end of the county, George's Gap is a winding road that leads to the quaint community of Bethel. During Helene, George's Gap was hit heavily, resulting in multiple parts of the road being destroyed. Construction has been taking place over the past couple of weeks, in attempt to restore it's previous functions.
Despite the damage, George's Gap still displays the most beautiful scenery. Since spring has arrived, flowers and trees are in full bloom, only adding to it's present beauty.
