Minimum Score for the ASVAB (AFQT) for Each Branch of the Military
With minimal exceptions, all military applicants must have a high school diploma or an equivalent degree, such as the GED, HiSET, or TASC. Current requirements are as follows:
Air Force
A minimum AFQT score of 36. A minimum score of 65 is required if the applicant has a high school equivalency degree (GED, TASC, HiSET) but has not completed at least 15 hours of college credit.
Army
A minimum AFQT score of 31. A minimum score of 50 is required for an applicant holding a high school equivalency degree (GED, TASC, HiSET).
Coast Guard
A minimum AFQT score of 40. Those holding a high school equivalency degree (GED, TASC, HiSET) need a score of at least 50 and should have at least 15 hours of college credit.
Marine Corps
A minimum AFQT score of 32. A minimum score of 50 is required for an applicant holding a high school equivalency degree (GED, TASC, HiSET).
Navy
A minimum AFQT score of 35. Those holding a high school equivalency degree (GED, TASC, HiSET) need a score of at least 50 and should have at least 15 hours of college credit.
Exceptions
Unique and desirable skill sets, such as fluency in a foreign language, may exempt applicants from AFQT minimums. A waiver may also be issued for high scores on a non-AFQT section that correlates to an in-demand job- for example, if there is a shortage of mechanics and the applicant does well on the Auto and Shop Information section.
If you are looking into joining the military or are facing the ASVAB, it is a good idea to talk to a recruiter to get the most accurate information for your situation. Best of luck as you take this exciting first step toward your military career!
