Tier One Instruction expectations
o Follow the Utah Professional Teaching Standards
o A Guaranteed and Viable Curriculum (GVC) is emphasized and planned first
o Small group reading instruction daily in conjunction with whole group instruction
o WIN Time instruction
o Positive classroom management, following the STOIC framework of CHAMPS.
o Highly effective use of time
o Engaging lessons and activities
o Constant and constructive feedback to students
o Use of highly effective research based instructional strategies that engage
learners
Collaboration expectations (PLC meetings):
o Meet weekly
o Commit to the PLC process of standards taught, CFAs, interventions/extensions
o Follow outlined norms
Math, Language Arts (including writing), and science (What do we want them to learn?)
o Design Common Pre and Post Assessments around the Essential Standards (How
do we know they learned it?)
o Hold a conversation about instruction; learn from each other.
o Use data from the common assessments to plan instruction and interventions
(What do we do with those who didn’t learn it?)
o Be able to show evidence of student learning. (Where are we now?)
o Know what to do during interventions with the students who “got it”. (What do
we do with those who learned it?)
Expectations for the Specific and Targeted Interventions:
o Based on data reflecting the Essential Standards and diagnostic testing.
o Research based (Does the intervention work?)
o Directive (the intervention is not optional for students)
o Timely… as many times a week as possible (4 times a week is better than 3)
Monitor learning every 2 – 3 weeks.
o Taught by Highly Trained people (the best person for the struggling students)
o Systematic (Every student who needs the intervention, gets the intervention)
