Standard II - Molecules and Cells

Students will understand that all organisms are composed of one or more cells that are; made of molecules, come from preexisting cells, and perform life functions.

OBJECTIVE 1

Describe the fundamental chemistry of living cells.

a) I can identify the 6 major chemical elements found in cells (CHNOPS)

b) I can explain the function of the 4 major groups of macromolecules in living organisms (proteins, carbohydrates, lipids and nucleic acids)

c) I can explain how the properties of water contribute to the maintenance of cells and living organisms

d) I can explain the role of enzymes within cells
