Emotion regulation refers to the ability to monitor, evaluate, and modulate emotional responses to achieve goals, complete tasks, or control behavior. OT often uses sensory-based interventions to help individuals process and respond to sensory stimuli in more adaptive ways. Poor sensory regulation can lead to emotional dysregulation, especially in children with autism or ADHD. OTs teach coping skills, self-awareness techniques, and emotional labeling to help clients recognize and regulate their emotions. These might include deep breathing, visualization, or journaling. Emotion regulation is closely tied to interpersonal skills. OTs often work on teaching turn-taking, conflict resolution, and understanding social cues. Many individuals struggle with emotion regulation due to poor impulse control, flexible thinking, or planning skills. OT can support these through structured routines and task management strategies.
