Folklore is an incredible album. Every aspect of it is like a fairy tale, but put into music. The lyrics of the songs tell a story that couldn't have been told with words on a page. Each song on the album contains a mixture of love, pain, guilt, regret, and sorrow and can emotionally move anyone who listens to it, without even listening to the full track! If you are going through a hard time listening to any song on this album can make you feel like you're not alone or that you are heard. The lyrics embody the hardships of love itself and how it can make you feel from happy to insanely full of regret and sadness. It is the most perfect emotional journey for anyone of any age, but for teenagers, it can really hit home.

I first listened to the song, I try by Macy Gray when I was around 10 years old. My mom loves Macy Gray and told me how she would listen to this song on repeat when she was younger. Since then, I did the same. I couldn’t help it. The melody of this song and the relatable, catchy lyrics are perfect to sing anywhere, anytime. I added this song to my many spotify playlists and never get mad when I rediscover it. Gray’s voice is unforgettable and her lyrics remind you that even when you love someone, sometimes it is difficult to get over them. Furthermore, the lyrics may come off as sad but in reality, the song expresses acceptance of allowing yourself to simply feel what you feel and move on step by step. This song is perfect for any mood though. I try by Macy Gray is definitely one to remember.

Do you enjoy 80’s or 90’s soul? Maybe hints of jazz or funk? Make sure to listen to Kiss of Life by Sade. This song was listened to by many people about 30 years ago, but now? It is still going viral! Everyone knows this song, and if you don’t you must listen. Sade’s voice is incredible and her vocals with a slight accent makes it better because she was born in Nigeria. Sade is famous all around the world. The song explains how an angel must have been by her side when she met someone. Expressing her appreciation for someone. I’m sure this is something many can relate to! The song has metaphorical phrases as well that emphasize love at its deepest level. Whether you know Kiss of Life by Sade or not don’t forget to listen to it, either to rediscover it, or to discover a whole new world of Sade. Enjoy it!

Punisher by Phoebe Bridgers is an album that only gets better with every listen. Bridgers’ voice is one that is insanely unique in the best way possible, and her songwriting on this project is some of my favorite. Captivating lyrics are littered throughout the album, and a sense of twisted sadness is crafted from the start. “Garden Song” tells a chilling tale of coming of age, and it’s one that many adolescents can relate to. It discusses how quickly time can go by and how much we change as we grow, and the bittersweet feelings that come along with it. The title track “Punisher” is one of my favorites from the album, as it speaks about parasocial relationships and the musical inspiration that she derives from Elliott Smith. Many fans feel similar about Bridgers, and she reflects on how easy it is to feel like you know a celebrity, when in actuality you don’t. One of the most popular songs, “Moon Song”, details a washy relationship that she shared with a partner, and how she cared so deeply for them that she was willing to do anything to maintain that love. She labeled it as “the wanting-to-be-stepped-on feeling”, and that definitely captures the essence of the song and the sad yearning that it showcases. I’d recommend giving this a listen, but be prepared to feel a deep sadness by the end of the album, and many conflicting emotions.

After the release of Immunity, I thought that Clairo wouldn’t be able to create another project as quite as beautiful. I was pleasantly surprised when I listened to Sling for the first time, and it quickly became one of my favorite albums of all time. Clairo captures the essence of growing up and the melancholy that comes with making new memories while still trying to maintain the old ones. The song “Blouse” is one that discusses the hardships of being a woman, specifically in the music industry. It is one that many women can relate to, illustrating how objectifying and dehumanizing it can be to simply exist in a man’s world. Songs like “Wade” and “Reaper” highlight the whirlwind of emotions that comes with growing older, and the beautiful backing instrumentals only cast the heart-wrenching lyrics in a brighter light. An album that many older adolescents can relate to, Sling tells different stories of heartbreak, romance, coming of age, and the loneliness that comes with adulthood.
