2020 Virtual Field School

Every day during the 2020 Virtual Field School, from June 1 to 30, we will post pictures from that same day from the past 19 summers at the Berry site. June 1

This day in field school history:

This was the first day of field school in 2010, 2012, and 2015. June 1, 2019 was a volunteer Dig Day through the Exploring Joara Foundation, giving local volunteers opportunities to participate in the dig during the fall and spring.

Today was the first day of field school in 2014.

Today was the first day of field school in 2013 and 2019.

This day in field school history:

Today was the first day of field school in 2018. It was not the first day of field school in 2001, but the start of the second week. According to Chris Rodning's notes from 2001, "It was warm today, and a quick rainstorm gave us a chance to huddle under the tent right after lunch until it passed."

This day in field school history:

Today was the end of the first week of field school in 2013 and 2019. In 2010, Feature 145 was uncovered, which was an unusual posthole full of potsherds, similar to Feature 129, excavated the previous year.

This day in field school history:

In 2012, the Fort San Juan Chapter of the National Society Colonial Dames XVII Century dedicated a plaque in honor of Fort San Juan, the "Earliest European settlement in the interior of the United States."

June 20: Field Day

Today, June 20, 2020, was scheduled for the 20th Annual Field Day. While we can't have field day at the Berry site this year, we are still posting pictures of excavations from the past 20 years, as well as a special feature from our site directors.

2013: After much deliberation, the moat around Fort San Juan was identified, finally solidifying the location of the fort.
