Welcome to 1st Grade!

We are WILD for learning!

First grade has the privilege of taking the momentum from Kindergarten and developing the love of learning and the pride of being a curious, diligent student. The literacy foundation that is laid in the preschool and Kindergarten years allows for rich Word Study, Writers’ Workshop, and Structured Literacy programs, all of which catapult the Ware Academy first grader to being a confident and joyful reader and writer. Number sense and problem solving are also built upon in first grade, using a constructivist approach that encourages using mental math and developing individual strategies so that math concepts make sense to the individual student. As we explore our natural world and our local history, we embrace learning opportunities that make the student understand their role and responsibility in preserving and promoting both in our community. In short, first grade is home to the burgeoning reader, writer, artist, mathematician, scientist, and historian!
