ANNUAL WANDELL INVENTION CONVENTION

Who is our next WANDELL INVENTOR/INNOVATOR?

Kindergarten: In this unit of study, Inventor Thinking (divergent/creative thinking) is reinforced. Lessons continue to focus on fluency, flexibility, originality, and elaboration. Students will use their innovative/ imaginative thinking skills to see extraordinary possibilities for problem solving in a given situation. Students orally present drawn solutions to class. They will be introduced to famous inventors and inventions and will find have fun finding new uses for objects.

Kindergarten Invention Fair Assignment: Besides wearing it on your head, how else can a hat be used ? Think of a new use for a hat!


K- 1 invention Convention

First Grade:

Our first grade students will be introduced to divergent production through inventive thinking. The students will be introduced to Isabel the inventor who is able to see extraordinary possibilities in ordinary everyday items. Students will learn the concepts of brainstorming, seeing things creatively in new and different ways, and piggybacking on the ideas of others. In class, they will expand their divergent production by creating a cycle for a spider while reviewing and developing their divergent production ideas. They will also create the Great Acorn Collection and Storage Machine by looking at items in new and different ways, showcasing elaborative thinking as well as fluency, flexibility, and originality.

First Grade Invention Fair Assignment: Students will invent/innovate something new for a toy or book bag. The addition/alteration should solve a problem.

Second Grade:

The purpose of this unit is to reinforce the inventive side of divergent thinking which includes brainstorming and using the SCAMPER process, a process used by inventors and innovators. Students will learn about inventors and inventions and the invention process. In class, they will design a raft made out of odds parts by force fitting different elements and manipulation of their parts.

Grade 2 Invention Fair Assignment Suggestion: Toys, games and puzzles can be a lot of fun for kids of all ages. Students are to create a new toy, game or puzzle and perhaps become the world’s newest business tycoon.
