The WHS Girls Basketball Program will abide by a very high standard. The coaching staff and the players within our program will represent our school both on and off the court with character, integrity, and pride. The main goal of our program is to prepare our players for the world after leaving high school. We will emphasize and care more about the young women our players are developing into off the court - in school and in the larger community. As legendary basketball Coach John Wooden once said, "What you are as a person is far more important than what you are as a basketball player." As a part of our goal to learn life skills, we will contribute positively to the WHS community and follow the standards set forth by the program. The goal of the material outlined below is to help our players understand what it means to be a part of the WHS Girls Basketball Program:
Practice times will vary slightly throughout the season. A schedule will be shared with athletes prior to the week/month to allow time to plan ahead.
Any ineligible player at the subvarsity level will be required to submit a progress report to their respective coach every Friday completed by all major subject teachers. Failure to submit the progress report will result in no practice time until the report is turned into the coach. All eligible players need to keep track of their schoolwork and report to their coach if they need assistance.
All players are expected to attend all practices and games for their respective team. If a player is to miss a practice or a game, they’ll need to communicate to their coach in advance. Acceptable reasons for being absent might include being sick or a family situation/emergency, and our staff will certainly work with the player and be understanding of the given situation. Communication is key!
1st missed practice without communication will result in sitting out 2 quarters in the following game. 2nd occurrence will result in missing the entire next game. Any additional occurrences will be handled on a case-by-case basis between the coaching staff and the player.
A player that is late for practice will be asked to communicate the reason for the tardiness. The first offense of an unexcused tardiness will result in a loss of playing time in the next game, and each additional offense could result in more playing time being lost. If the player is getting assistance from a teacher, the player brings a note to the coach, and the player is completely excused.
A player that develops a continuous pattern of being late to school will be spoken to by their coach. A pattern is more than once in a given week or one every week for several weeks in a row. If the player has either situation mentioned above, the result will be a loss of playing time in the next game.
A player that is having behavioral issues in the classroom resulting in discipline referrals and communication with their Associate Principal will be spoken to by the coach. If the pattern doesn’t change the player will be suspended for the next game. Each Associate Principal will have a list of each roster and be in communication with the coach as needed.
