Classroom Procedures and Guidelines


Procedures for Addressing the Teacher

  1. It is important to ask a question if you do not understand. Please do not be afraid to ask questions.

  2. Students will raise their hands to ask questions.

  3. Students will wait politely for their turn to speak.

  4. Students will use complete sentences.

  5. Students will show respect and pay attention to other people’s questions and their answers.

  6. Students will NEVER laugh at anyone for asking a question.


Procedures for D.E.A.R. (Drop Everything and Read)

  1. Since good readers are made and not born, everyone will engage in reading during D.E.A.R. time.

  2. Be prepared for D.E.A.R. You must have a library book with you at all times.

  3. If you notice you are getting close to the end of your book, take the initiative to bring or choose another book.

  4. D.E.A.R. time is a very quiet time in our classroom.

  5. You may quietly take an AR test on our class computers. Use the Library/ AR List to sign up for your turn.

  6. Reading is fun. Enjoy yourself and explore the many genres available to you!


Procedures for Handing in Papers

  1. Turn in ALL homework as soon as you unload your backpack in the morning.

  2. Put your name and number on all papers. Highlight your name before placing your paper in the appropriate basket.

  3. Papers should be turned in the same direction and face up in the appropriate basket.

  4. Late work policy. It is important that you complete and turn in your assignments when due. Homework is expected back the following day.


Procedures for Absent Work

  1. When you return to school from an absence, you should find an Absentee Folder with your assignments and work on your desk. If there is not one it is your responsibility to check with the teacher.

  2. Review the assignments due from when you were absent. If you do not understand what is required on any assignment, check with the teacher immediately. We may need to work together immediately. We may need to work together during recess or after school.

  3. For each day you are absent, you are allowed one day to complete your assignments.

  4. It is your responsibility to turn in absentee work without the teacher having to ask for it.

  5. Absentee work that is not turned in on time will be considered late work.


Procedures for Entering the Classroom

  1. The teacher will pick you up on the patio at 8:05 am. Line up quietly.

  2. When you first enter the classroom move your number to the appropriate section of the attendance board.

  3. Unload your backpack and turn in any homework.

  4. Sharpen two pencils, organize your belongings for the day, and write in your planner.

  5. Begin your morning work.


Procedures for Sharpening Pencils

  1. Limit of three students at the pencil sharpeners. One is located by the sink. The other is on the left side of the closet.

  2. Sharpen TWO pencils each morning.

  3. Students will NOT sharpen pencils when the teacher is instructing or during class discussions.

  4. If you find yourself needing a pencil you will need to follow this procedure.

*Go to the supply center and borrow a sharpened pencil.

*Return the borrowed pencil at the end of the day. Be sure to sharpen it first.


Procedures for Playground

  1. We will follow the “Peaceful Playground” rules.

  2. All students are to obey the adults on the playground and report any incidents, problems, or accidents to the adults on duty.

  3. Stay within the fenced areas.

  4. Rocks, grass, wood chips, and dirt remain on the ground at all times.

  5. Take turns and use good sportsmanship.

  6. No tackle football, roughhousing, piggyback rides, wrestling, or any games that could result in injury.

  7. When the whistle is blown, line up immediately in the appropriate location and stand quietly using line up procedures. We will not enter the building until everyone is following the procedure.


Procedures for Guest Speakers and Assemblies

  1. Sit quietly.

  2. Use active listening skills.

  3. Focus your eyes, ears, and heart on the speaker.

  4. Save questions and comments until the speaker asks for them.

  5. Wait until you are called on by the speaker to ask a question.

  6. Make sure your question or comment is positive in nature and is about the subject discussed by the speaker.

  7. The speaker will feel appreciated if the audience is attentive and LISTENS.


Procedures for Hallways

  1. When you enter the hallway it is a “Quiet Zone” do not disturb other classes.

  2. Students will walk on the right side of the hallways or walkways keeping their hands, feet, and bodies to themselves.

  3. If we encounter another class or an adult do not cut through their lines. Please pause and allow them to pass.


Procedures for Classroom Guests

  1. Sit quietly and continue learning independently if possible.

  2. D.E.A.R. until the teacher has addressed the visitor and returned to instruction.


Procedures for Lunchroom

  1. Always wash your hands before eating.

  2. Use your line procedures when you enter and exit the cafeteria.

  3. Do not throw or play with food.

  4. Do not touch other people’s food.

  5. Use your proper table manners and clean up after yourself.

  6. Line up quietly when it is time to exit the cafeteria to go to recess. Do not waste this special time.


Procedures for Lining Up

  1. I will call you by rows to line up. Stand quietly and push in your chairs.

  2. We will have a new line leader each day that will set a good example for the group.

  3. Face forward and no talking or you will be asked to return to your seat.

  4. Keep hands, feet, and bodies to yourself.


Procedures for Restroom Breaks

  1. Please take breaks before class begins, when we switch classes, during scheduled break times, or during lunch/ recess.

  2. Students will not use the restroom during instruction time unless it is an emergency. If it is an emergency, quickly and quietly go to the Pass Log and sign your name and write the time. Write the time when you return. This record will assure us of your safety and keep a record of your emergency situations.

  3. It is your responsibility to use this opportunity wisely. If you choose to misbehave or abuse the facilities you will only be allowed to go with an escort.


Procedures for Spare Time

  1. Finish any incomplete work.

  2. D.E.A.R.

  3. AR Test

  4. Writing Practice

  5. Practice Spelling Words

  6. Learning Center Activities

  7. Library

  8. Study Island

  9. Remember, you have the opportunity/ privilege to make your choices as long as you make good choices. If you fail to make a good choice, the teacher will begin to make choices for you.


Procedures for Water Bottles

  1. You may have a water bottle at your desk as long as it has a lid. Please be very careful with your water bottle.

  2. Empty and fill water bottles during break times.

  3. Keep them closed when not in use.

  4. Do not store water bottles in the desks, cubbies, or near textbooks.

  5. Clean up any messes you make.

  6. Your water bottle must be clear in color.

Procedure for Fire Drill

  1. The alarm will be sounded. The fire bell is one continuous ring.

  2. Immediately get quiet and form a line to follow your teacher as she leads you outside. Do not push or shove. Stay with your class. Walk quickly without talking.

  3. When we are safely away from the building the teacher will call the roll. You will need to answer with your voice and a raised hand.

  4. If you are in another class stay with that teacher.

  5. If you are separated from the group, contact the nearest adult and find the nearest exit. Your teacher will be looking for you.


Procedure for Tornado Drill

  1. The alarm will be sounded. The tornado bell is several short rings.

  2. Immediately get quiet and form a line to follow your teacher to the storm shelter. Do not push or shove. Stay with your class. Walk quickly without talking.

  3. Move into your positions as soon as possible. Use the handrail on the stairway.

  4. Be very quiet and listen for instructions. The roll will be taken.


Procedures for a Substitute Teacher

  1. Be on your best behavior. Follow all of our classroom procedures without being reminded.

  2. Be flexible. The substitute has many notes and instructions from me, but he/she will not do things exactly like me.

  3. Remember the substitute is in charge and will ask for your help if they need it.

  4. Having a substitute is a great opportunity to show off your best manners. I know you will have a super productive day even without me.


Procedures for Field Trips

  1. Field trips are privileges and should be treated as such.

  2. We will follow line procedures as usual unless otherwise instructed.

  3. We load the bus quietly and immediately take the roll. When your teacher calls your number you answer with your voice and raise your hand.

  4. No standing or walking in the aisle when the bus is moving. Bottoms down in the seat at all times.

  5. Courtesy and good manners are expected to be used at all times.

  6. Stay with your assigned group.

  7. Listen carefully to instructions and follow them.


Procedures for Ending the Day

  1. Check your planner sheet. Completed assignments should be checked off. Incomplete assignments should be circled or highlighted. These assignments will be homework.

  2. Gather any books, folders, and supplies necessary to complete your homework.

  3. Retrieve papers from your mailbox.

  4. Put ALL papers in the appropriate pockets of your take-home folder. No loose papers in your backpack, cubby, or desk.

  5. Pack your binder, books, and supplies in your backpack.

  6. Clear and straighten your desk or cubby. Clean up around your work area.

  7. Perform any class jobs as necessary.

  8. Wait patiently for the teacher to dismiss you.
