Who can participate in the Work Study Program?
At this time, the Work Study Program is only available to Senior students in a good academic and conduct standing.
When can I apply to the Work Study Program?
Applications will be available for Juniors on March 1st. All eligible applicants will be interviewed in April.
What does my schedule look like?
Students in the program will have a "condensed" academic schedule for their senior year, completing all academic obligations necessary for graduation by the end of Semester 1 (January). This includes a double block of Senior English, a Work Study class, and an online Math course. For second semester, students will be reporting to their internship instead of to school. They will be responsible for turning in weekly time sheets, journals, and monthly in-person check-ins at the school.
What is the Work Study Class?
In addition to preparing for internship placements, students will also receive direct instruction in; job exploration, exploring interests - aptitudes, the world of work, how to get a job, what to do before you start, on the job, important job related life skills, and additional skills needed to be a well rounded 21st century employee.
Does my internship count toward graduation?
Yes! Students receive credit toward graduation for their internship.
Am I still a WHS student if I participate in the Work Study Program?
Yes! Students are still considered Walpole High School students and are encouraged to continue any sports, clubs, or activities they are a part of.
Will I still be able to apply to college if I join the work study program?
Yes! Students in the program will meet all local and state requirements for graduation and continuing education, although colleges may have specific requirements for admission. Students are encouraged to meet with their school counselors and reach out to colleges which they intend to apply to to see how their application may be impacted.
Do Work Study students get paid?
Payment for internships is not guaranteed and varies company to company.
Is there a cost associated with the Work Study Program?
There is no cost to join the program, however, depending on the placement, students and families may be responsible for covering the costs of tools, clothing, gear, or certification courses. Ask your school counselor about available scholarships.
