The WCSD Connection
Engage, Inspire, Empower ALL Learners.
Connecting the Walnut Creek School District with news, stories and articles of information & inspiration.
A Note from Superintendent Morgan
Dear Walnut Creek School District Staff, Students and Families,
When the calendar changes to September, it reminds us that fall is creeping closer bringing all of the wonderful changes that come with a new season. Cooler weather, bright colored leaves and the holiday season are just around the corner. Personally, I am looking forward to pulling out my favorite flannel, a crackling fire, pumpkin spice everything and pulling out one of the novels I have been collecting.
This fall we are bringing back our One District One Book Read-a-thon sponsored by WCEF which launches on November 1st. In place of one book, we are selecting one author, which will allow students to read books that are engaging to their grade level span. Stay tuned for the announcement of the selected titles! Last year, our students devoured hundreds of books and shared wonderful stories about what they were reading with their friends and families. I am excited to see our young readers fall into reading this month and rediscover the joy of a wonderful story. Thank you to the many volunteers who are encouraging our students to wonder, explore and learn through this amazing community event.
We are eager to share this first edition of our quarterly district bulletin, The WCSD Connection. Our goal is to share news, stories and articles that will inform, inspire and connect our community of learners. This edition includes a spotlight on our partnership with Epoch Education, an introduction to our new staff, and an article to inspire you with the impact of Measure D bond funds. Please let us know what you think and share any topics you would like to learn more about in future editions.
Wishing you a happy and healthy month ahead!
Marie
Spotlight: Meet Dr. Nancy Dome
All WCSD staff attended our Keynote address, Equity by Design, presented by Dr. Nancy Dome of Epoch Education on August 9. The keynote address launched our partnership with Epoch Education in support of our equity professional learning plan. Dr. Dome’s message invited us to design communities of belonging for students and staff. "This is not easy work and we will need to focus our energy and intention on our equity plan to make it a reality", challenged Dr. Dome. She encouraged us to look at all of our systems through the lens of equity: policies, outcomes, power, relationships, and solutions. We can expect this work to be constantly evolving as we continue to strive for a more equitable school system.
Dr. Dome shared the following definitions to help guide our work around diversity, equity and inclusion.
Diversity - all the ways in which people differ; recognize that people affiliate with multiple identities.
Equity - the fair treatment, access, opportunity, and advancement for all people.
This requires striving to identify and eliminate barriers that have prevented the full participation of some groups, equitable distribution of resources, and understanding the root causes of inequity.
Inclusion - ways in which any individual or group can be and feel welcomed, respected, supported, and valued to fully participate.
The keynote address concluded with an introduction to Compassionate Dialogue: a conversation to resolve a problem or find a solution through connection and showing empathy for others. The idea of showing up for all community members with compassion and empathy resonated with our staff as we have supported each other and our classroom communities through the trials of 2020-21. In the spirit of appreciating the importance of taking time to build relationships and empathy with all stakeholders, all staff members will participate in a professional learning module and a facilitated discussion this fall with the support of Epoch Education. Over the next two school years we will participate in the following additional Epoch learning modules in support of deepening equity: Thriving as a Racially Conscious Person in the United States, Let’s Talk About Race, and What is Implicit Bias?
Dr. Dome’s message of creating communities of belonging provided an inspiring kickoff to the new school year. We hope you will join us virtually for a community conversation with Dr. Nancy Dome on November 4th at 6:00 p.m. - save the date!

WCI Bond Project-Measure D
Walnut Creek School District’s Middle School recently entered a new chapter in a life that began in 1952. As the transformation of the WCI school campus reaches its final stages we have welcomed 1,100 students into 21st-century learning environments that support collaboration, creativity, and safety.
This transformation would not be possible without the support of our incredible Walnut Creek community. Measure D has created an avenue to reimagine our educational spaces, modernize our facilities by providing safety upgrades across our entire district. Below are several snapshots of the newly renovated spaces.
The school’s new front entrance, facing Walnut Blvd, is identified by a renovated administration building and student plaza. Students, faculty, and visitors are welcomed through a street-facing entrance into the school’s administration office. The main office will now be adjacent to a new wellness center which will help support the social-emotional needs of our student body.
At the reception areas, staff support spaces, and corridor multi-colored wall graphics are added to provide positive school messaging adding visual interest to previously monochromatic painted walls, shedding the institutional image of the past.
From this space, office staff have direct views of the exterior, the main entrance, and the school lobby and main corridor.
A complete renovation of the original classroom buildings creates collaboration and group meeting areas by carving out spaces in the corridors and classrooms. These areas will be used for group projects and break out spaces for students and faculty. The interior finishes within classrooms have received updates. This includes new flooring, paint, colorful tack walls, white board walls, and casework.
All classrooms are more spacious, and equipped with technology that encourages exploration and critical thinking. The fixtures, technology, furniture and flexible design of these spaces are intended to spark conversations, creativity, and collaboration. The classroom renovations and layout naturally create outdoor learning environments which have proven to be valuable assets to next-generation curriculum. These spaces give students and teachers a chance to extend learning past the classroom walls to the outdoors.
The newly renovated performing arts center within Squire Hall is located on the west side of the campus and will support a thriving performing arts program. All these spaces are intended to be extensions of the commons and give the middle school student a variety of places to study, collaborate, and hang out. Squire Hall also leads out into a wholly redesigned outdoor dining experience, highlighted by diverse seating arrangements.
The library media center has been reconfigured to be flexible, with multiple areas for collaboration and individual study. It takes full advantage of natural light with the existing wall of glass on the north. This room’s existing open design places the librarian right in the center, with direct views throughout the space and easily accessible to students.
Education is the key to unlocking the world.....a passport to freedom.
