SQUILT is a peaceful time for listening to music. For SQUILT in the BV Music Room, we try to:
Listen and think about the music
Keep our bodies quiet and still (no matter how exciting, loud, or familiar the music is)
Keep our thoughts to ourselves (no matter how exciting, loud, or familiar the music is)
Allow our minds to roam without disturbing our classmates
In the end, SQUILT just means to listen to music in a calm way - take a break and relax.
That depends! We think about many different things during SQUILT including:
Nothing at all!
What the music makes us imagine or think about
When do you think the music created?
Who is this music for or why was it written/performed?
How many people/instruments do you hear?
Do you like this music? Why?
That last one is most important! It is always okay to dislike the music we listen to, but you must be able to explain why!
Any music will do! Choose a song and listen! In the BV Music Room, we usually listen to pieces of music that are less that 3 minutes long, help support the learning we've done in class, and give us something to think about. If you are doing SQUILT at home, you may choose your own rules! It could be:
Songs you know
Songs you don't know
Songs with words/without words/words in various languages
Your favorite singer/musician/orchestra/composer
World music to help you understand other cultures
