Hola! I am the Spanish teacher at Old Mill School.
I have a passion for language and World culture.
I was born in Spain but grew up in London, England. I have now lived in the USA longer than I did in the UK. I love art, music and travel.
I enjoy teaching using Comprehensible Input (CI) and Storytelling. Through this method students become comfortable with the language through listening and speaking activities and less emphasis is put on isolated vocabulary and grammar structures. With this method students can become proficient in Spanish using the same process through which we become proficient in our first language. This process is called language acquisition, and it is different than language learning.
“We acquire language when we understand messages;
when we understand what people tell us and when we understand what we read”.
Dr. Stephen Krashen.
For acquisition driven classes, I create lesson plans that have a communicative purpose in mind (telling a story, having a conversation, playing a game, etc.) and I plan for how the lessons will help students to understand the communication. Vocabulary is of course used to communicate, but the purpose of the lesson is communication not memorizing vocabulary.
The acquisition of language that happens through Comprehensible Input is subconscious, students can gain proficiency more quickly, and have confidence in their abilities, all while having fun!
