Dear Parents/Guardians;
Hello! I would like to start by introducing myself. My name is Michael J. Meyers, and I have the honor of being the principal of Waldwick Middle School. I am very excited about the opportunity to work with you to create a wonderful, comprehensive middle school experience for your child. Through effective communication, we can work collaboratively in the best interest of your son or daughter. The time to start our dialogue about your child’s middle school program, and academic growth and development is quickly coming upon us.
It is the time of year when we at the middle school begin discussing class scheduling and your child’s academic program for the 2025/2026 school year. This is a process that requires careful consideration, as well as strong communication between home and school. To that end, I would like to inform you about the process for having your child select some of the key elements for their sixth-grade schedule. Your child will be asked to choose between Band or Chorus as a sixth grader, as all six grade students are required to participate in at least one of the programs. If he or she is so inclined, they may participate in both. Incoming sixth graders will also be asked to choose between Spanish and French as one of their sixth-grade cycle courses. Please note, in seventh grade they will choose a world language that will be a full year, two-year commitment. On this Google site, you will view our Course of Studies booklet which will explain each course to you. In this booklet is a table that lists all the courses your child will experience at each grade level during their time at WMS. Please review this document with your child as it will serve to familiarize you and them with their academic program.
Please allow me to familiarize you with our sixth-grade program. All students in sixth grade will take Mathematics, Writers Workshop/Language Arts, Readers Workshop, Science, Social Studies and P.E./Health. They will also take four cycle classes as we run a four marking period program. Each marking period they will have a different cycle class. These cycle courses will include the world language of their choice, Art Appreciation, Stage & Sound, and Medical Detectives. To provide our sixth-grade students with a true middle school experience, we offer an Enrichment program that provides students with the opportunities for exploration, enrichment, and enhancement of their traditional academic programs. This course is comprised of Computer Applications, Financial Literacy, and elements of our character education program.
All students in the middle school will have the opportunity to participate in Band and Chorus. Again, students in sixth grade are required to participate in either Band or Chorus. They may choose to participate in both. These programs are pull-out programs. When a student chooses to participate in Band, Chorus, or both, he/she will only miss one physical education class or one cycle class per week for each selection.
To help prepare for your child’s arrival, and create their 6th grade schedule, please complete the attached Google Form Course Selection sheet. On this form, your child will be asked to choose Spanish or French for their 6th grade world language. They will also be required to choose Band or Chorus. Please complete this Google form and submit by Friday, January 17, 2025.
The faculty and staff of the middle school are very excited about the opportunity to work with you and your child. As an educational community, we are also very excited about the programs that are being offered to our students. We are confident that they will serve to provide all of our students with a comprehensive, challenging, and appropriate middle school experience.
We will be conducting a Sixth Grade Parent Orientation program in the spring. This program will provide you with an opportunity to tour the middle school facility and become familiar with the school and program that your child will be entering starting this upcoming September. Details regarding the time and place of this program will be sent to you in the near future. We will also have the fifth-grade students visit the middle school in the spring. We will have more information regarding this program in the spring as well.
If you have any questions or concerns regarding your child’s program for September 2025, please do not hesitate to give me a call at (201) 652-9000.
Thank you and have a great day.
Sincerely,
Michael J. Meyers
