In Reading, students will be assessed to determine their independent reading level and their instructional reading level. Then students will work on the phonics skills and comprehension skills needed to be successful readers at the next reading level. This will continue until readers are reading at the independent level that corresponds with the level for their grade. Students will read one passage/book that they have read previously. This is done to build their reading fluency (speed) and prosody (how loud or quiet to read a part, and the emotion to use when reading it). Students will then have a mini lesson on a phonics skill that relates to the next passage/book they will be reading. At times, students may work on a packet of activities to correlate decoding (figuring out words when reading) and how to spell words. Students will discuss passages/books to demonstrate their understanding of what they read.
