Waipahu Wayfinders

Summer program

The 2020-2021 school year will be a journey into the unknown. The Waipahu Wayfinders program was an opportunity for EL teachers and students to explore the future of school and chart a course for success in an online environment. Over the span of four weeks, students learned the ropes and gained the skills they will need to navigate online school, such as how to use Google Classroom, how to send a professional email, and how to create, share, and organize files in Google Drive. Then they raised their sails and set out on their own, exploring online tools and building personal websites to showcase their new skills.

As a final project, students made multilingual websites and screencast tutorials to share what they learned with their peers. These websites and tutorials have been shared with schools across Oahu and in the Philippines and Marshall Islands. Teachers gained experience leading online classes and learned alongside the students. Twenty-three students were in the 100% online cohort and eighteen students were in the hybrid cohorts that met in-person one or two days a week.
