It is important to know what a simple, compound and complex sentence is so that you can choose the best sentence type for your writing. Below there are links to Kahn Academy. Use these to back up the learning we have already done in class, or to remind you if you have forgotten.

What is a sentence? A sentence is a grammatically complete idea. All sentences have a noun or pronoun component called the subject, and a verb part called the predicate. David and Paige explore this division across several different example sentences.

Simple and compound sentences A simple sentence contains one independent clause. A compound sentence contains more than one! Put another way: a simple sentence contains a subject and a predicate, but a compound sentence contains more than one subject and more than one predicate.
