This is a site I have developed for teachers to use as a resource to help build reading comprehension skills. It is targeted at the NZ Curriculum Reading levels 19-24 (Purple, Silver and Gold on the colour wheel) as this is where more inferential comprehension is required. I have noticed that many students, especially those for whom English is a second language (ESOL), struggle to progress to higher levels. I have explained the different types of questions that the students will learn and have created resources that match the school journals they might use in class.
I have been teaching for 7 years and I teach Year 5 & 6 in a 1:1 chromebook shared space with two other classes. I teach at Waikowhai Primary in Mount Roskill, Auckland. I have chosen to focus on accelerating reading comprehension for ESOL students, as it is an area that I have noticed that many students progress starts to slow as the literal comprehension is replaced by inferential and evaluative. This requires them to make connections and form opinions, rather than find the literal answer on the page. I am hoping to increase their skills and confidence through the use of the resources on this site.
I have taught Year 3 & 4 for six years and two years teaching Year 5 & 6. In both cohorts I have found the evidence and data the same. Many ESOL students make steady progress as they get more familiar with English. However, when they reach level 23, which has text without pictures and more inferential comprehension questions they often struggle to progress. The expected reading level at the end of Year 4 is level 23-2, for Year 5 is 26-28 years and Year 6 is 29-30.
