Term 3
This term we are learning about Maramataka / the Māori lunar calendar. We have connected this learning to our Inquiry topic of Space.
We have celebrated Matariki and learned about different traditions and whakatauki (proverbs) connected with Maramataka.
Lots of traditions connect the phases of the moon to different activities like fishing, planting and harvesting. One big harvest for Kai Tahu iwi is tītī (muttonbirds). Lots of preparation and separate harvests of rimurapa (kelp), harakeke (flax) and tōtara bark need to happen to prepare the pōhā (kelp bags) to store the tītī before the birds are caught. This video explains the process of making the pōhā that has been shared in Tiny Metzger's family for generations.
