Manchester, NH: The is our largest city here in New Hampshire located in Hillsborough County, the city of Manchester sits on the banks of the Merrimack River. With a population of approximately 113,000. Manchester is one of the fastest growing metropolitan areas in New Hampshire and the New England region.
The area that now includes Manchester saw its first English settlers in 1722-23 and was well known for its fisheries. In 1751 it was incorporated as Derryfield. However, in 1810, it was renamed Manchester. Through 1930, the economy in the area was dominated by the Amoskeag Manufacturing Company’s cotton-milling operations, the largest textile mill factory in the world at that time.
Cool but comfortable temperatures and the fantastic changing of the leaves draw large numbers of visitors to New Hampshire in October and November. Through the winter, ample regular snowfalls make skiing popular, while hiking is a major draw once temperatures thaw.
Originally a textile mill town, Manchester’s economy has changed tremendously in recent years. Today, major signs of recent economic growth in downtown Manchester include City Hall Plaza, Northern New England's tallest building and the New Hampshire headquarters of Citizens Bank and Bank of America. Manchester is home to a growing technology sector which includes companies such as BAE Systems, Allegro Microsystems, Velcro Brand, DEKA Research and Design, and Jewell Instruments.
Universities in the area include Saint Anselm College (home to the NH Institute of Politics, which hosts every single Presidential Candidate in advance of the NH Primary), Southern New Hampshire University (the largest provider of nonprofit online learning with over 138,000 students) and University of New Hampshire at Manchester.
Cultural landmarks include the Palace Theater, home to the New Hampshire Symphony and the Opera League of New Hampshire, the Currier Museum of Art, and the Zimmerman House, designed by the famous American architect Frank Lloyd Wright. Manchester is also home to the New England College, the Manchester Historic Association Millyard Museum, the Massabesic Audubon Center, The Amoskeag Fishways Learning and Visitors Center, The Franco-American Center, the Lawrence L. Lee Scouting Museum and Max I. Silber Library, and the SEE Science Center. The SNHU Arena, a 10,000-seat arena used for concerts, fairs and sporting events, has become a central feature of downtown Manchester.
Although not our state capitol, Manchester is known for its incredible diversity as it is a refugee resettlement city. There are over 90 languages spoken in the public school system. Here you will easily find a diverse selection of restaurant cuisine options as well as great museums and local attractions.
