The Team and Supporters:
Kelly Jackson led the research effort for Rising Tides, Rising Tensions. She serves as the associate director of the Robert Nusbaum Center at Virginia Wesleyan University. The Center seeks to help people see beyond their own worldview, and look through new lenses, so as to deepen their understanding and empathy of others. Kelly has lived in Hampton Roads for most of her life and feels deeply connected to the area. She is passionate about bridging divides and building community to create a more equitable, just, and inclusive landscape for our region. In addition to her work through the Nusbaum Center, her involvement with Hands United Building Bridges, the Virginia Center for Inclusive Communities, and the Interspiritual Empowerment Project inspires her and gives her hope for our future.
Destini Harrell is a community artist, translator, and connector, and what she calls a “street-level economic and cultural developer.” Destini is fueled by her passion to bridge worlds- of people, resources, and concepts- and to build both micro and macro communities, turning her lifestyle into her life’s work. Hampton Roads born-and-bred, Destini is committed to being a part of the “long game” of making the potential of this region a reality, and influencing the cultural dynamics to do so. A writer, lover of wisdom, and contemplative generalist, Destini loves finding the connectedness of seemingly unrelated things and discovering the beautiful complexity of seemingly simple things. This, with her unique range of background, some faith, and a little chutzpah, is what inspires her to take leaps into the unknown that lead to purpose.
Michael Corcoran, born and raised in Norfolk, VA, has worked for over a decade in the industrial sandblasting and painting maritime industry. From working on the water, to waking up in it, he is all too aware of how the rising water levels have impacted our communities. As a key member of The DoArt Network and Collective, since 2018, Michael was a vital component in designing deckles and carrying out the process to make recycled paper for Petals for Peace, which honored families and victims of the May 31st tragedy in Virginia Beach, and the She’s a BrickHouse Scroll at the Zeiders American Dream Theater Women’s Celebration 2022. Michael’s building expertise and expansive knowledge of materials aid in community healing projects alongside artist-friend Renée Calway.
Virginia Wesleyan University students from the course, Artist and Society, taught by Dr. Howell, Dr. Shedd, and Professor Howell. Renee Callway led art creation workshops with the students to build bridges and add essence of the community to the piece. Students from the course, Honors Climatology, designed this website to connect the science to the justice issues represented in the piece.
