FAQs
Can I still play sports as a STRONG Academy student?
Yes. about 70-75% of our students are athletes in at least 1 sport during the school year.
Will I need to spend time working after school?
Other than the typical homework and studying for exams, you will not be asked to spend extra time outside of the normal school day. One exception to that will be to participate for on day in our annual 5k/10k/virtual race fundraiser held on a Saturday; typically in October.
Can I take AP classes and COS classes?
Yes! And we highly recommend it. We will help you get the most out of your 4 years. We will provide assistance with registering for those classes as well.
Can I still participate band, choir, dance, drumline, color guard, etc?
Yes you can. We like our students to still pursue their other electives. However, there is not enough room in a typical schedule for more than 2 electives; especially sophomore year. Therefore, there might come a time when a student that is involved in multiple avenues may have to take a pre-first to fit all their courses in or may have to put one thing on hold for a year.
Since I am not supposed to take Health in summer school, what other classes can I take?
You can enroll in Drivers Ed on your own through one of several online programs (Drivers Ed To Go is offered through VUSD - see button below) or we will be working with our XL after school program to offer Driver’s Ed to students during the school year who are interested.
Unfortunately, no other courses are typically offered for incoming freshmen over the summer through VUSD. But if you would like discuss potential options, please email Mirwald at kmirwald@vusd.org.
Current 8th graders can apply during the district approved application window using the button to the left. This window is typically open during the months of January and February. If the application window has passed, please email kmirwald@vusd.org for more information about applying.
The Academy Contract must be signed by all academy students district wide prior to starting the academy
