Ange Jessurun - Mama di Arte di Palabra - was born in 1954 and grew up in a large family of teachers on Curaçao. From 1972 to 1978, she studied microbiology at the Catholic University of Nijmegen, with Papiamento as a minor subject in Utrecht. After completing her studies, she returned to Curaçao to work as a teacher at Peter Stuyvesant College (since 2011 College Alejandro Paula) in Willemstad.
She is particularly interested in the formation and development of cultural awareness and (native) language proficiency in children and young people. She is co-author of various Papiamento-language teaching methods. She is the initiator of Arte di Palabra, a successful Papiamento-language writing and recitation competition for secondary education.
Since 2009, she has been affiliated with the University of Curaçao as coordinator of the Master of Education programs in Papiamento, English, Spanish, and Dutch at the Faculty of Educational Professions and Cultural Studies. Thanks to the use of a digital platform, the programs can also be followed in Aruba, Bonaire, and Sint Maarten.
