Why Chromebooks? Chromebooks have become a great alternative for education. They are affordable, offer a variety of useful apps, and students can access their files and apps from anywhere (as long as you have Internet access).
What type of Chromebook will my child be receiving? VTSD has chosen Dell Chromebooks for our fleet. These devices are affordable, durable, and easy to maintain.
Why not BYOD - Bring your own device? Many of our students today have access to a device at home and/or their own personal device. At VTSD we decided to go with a one-to-one model for consistency and ease of classroom management. Also, we did not want to burden families with the expectation that they must buy a device for school since not all families may be able to afford one.
Will students be taking their chromebooks home? Starting in the Fall of 2017, VTHS students will have the option to bring their device to home. Students are not required to bring devices home however they are required to have the device available for class. For the other grades besides high school, students will only use the device during school hours and at school.
What happens if the Chromebook is left at home or is brought to school with no power? (High School Only) The Chromebooks are a required classroom tool - students will be responsible to not only bring the device to class but to also charge the device. A missing device or device with no power may result in the loss of preparedness /participation grades.
What happens if there are technical issues with the student's chromebook? If a student has a technical issue with their device, they should report the issue to their teacher and/or the main office secretaries. The IT Department will be notified and the technical issues will be remedied. At the High School we have our student-led Geek Squad open periods 5-8 to help with repairs and questions.
What if the Chromebook is lost or stolen? Students should report a lost or stolen Chromebook immediately. If the device still as power, we may be able to track the geo-location of the device. If not, the police will be notified in order to open a police report and the administration will conduct an investigation. If the student has been negligent, the family may be billed a prorated amount for the lost device.
Will Students be provided with a loaner Chromebook if theirs is under repair for an extended period of time? Yes. The IT Department will have spare devices in cases where a device cannot be repaired in a short amount of time. We do not want students missing academic opportunities due to repairs.
How much does it cost to repair a Chromebook? The district will repair any first-time damages (with the exception of vandalism). However, if a student damages a device multiple times in a school year, the family will be billed for the 2nd or more occurrence(s). See our policy for associated costs.
What is the Anti-Big Brother law? VTSD provides students with Chromebooks. These devices may have the ability to record or collect information on the student’s activity or use of the device. This is especially true of equipment that includes a camera, Global Positioning System, or other feature capable of recording or collecting information on the student’s activity or use of the device. VTSD will not use any of these capabilities in a manner that would violate the privacy rights of the student or any individual residing with the student. This requirement is mandated by the Anti-Big Brother Act, signed by Gov. Chris Christie in April, 2013, which is intended to support the privacy rights of students.
