What is WiDS Blacksburg? 

WiDS Blacksburg is independently organized by Angie Patterson and Monica Ahrens to be part of the mission to increase participation of women in data science and to feature outstanding women doing outstanding work.

WiDS stands for Women in Data Science. It is a series of regional events focused primarily on technical aspects and applications of data science, in which all the presenters are women. The goal is to encourage women to pursue careers in data science, and to support them by building a local community of data scientists, helping them develop their skill set and understand more about what it means to apply data science techniques to a variety of challenging problems. 

WiDS Blacksburg is an independent event that is organized by Virginia Tech as part of the annual WiDS Worldwide conference organized by Stanford University and an estimated 200+ locations worldwide, which features outstanding women doing outstanding work in the field of data science. All genders are invited to attend all WiDS Worldwide conference events. 

This event is open to anyone interested in data science. We hope to have attendees on campus from Virginia Tech and the Blacksburg community, as well as the New River and Roanoke Valleys. Students of all ages (from high school to graduate school) will find topics of interest, as will those who have already launched their data science careers.
