I had a busy day fielding interview requests from news/media outlets in Virginia and North Carolina! While I missed feeling it myself, being ~65 miles away, many in the Blacksburg area did feel a distinct jolt.

Years of geologic mapping by Ray Wells (USGS) and geophysical modeling by Rick Blakely (USGS) - supplemented by exploratory paleoseismic trenching that I conducted during my postdoc - on the Gales Creek fault zone in the Oregon forearc is now published online with Geosphere. Open Access!

The spatio-temporal convergence of the gradual disintegration of GFURR and a new position within the Department of Geosciences has led me to move across campus where I am continuing my research in earthquake geology while supporting geophysical and hydrogeological field activities.

Virginia Tech's Global Forum on Urban and Regional Resilience (GFURR), with additional support from the Institute for Society, Culture, and Environment, will be hosting a symposium titled, Rapid Georisks: Social, geoscience, and engineering perspectives on risk and resilience at National Capitol Region campus in Arlington, VA, from December 16th-18th. This broadly interdisciplinary symposium is focused on the specific challenges for community resilience posed by infrequent, unpredictable-but-inevitable natural events, including earthquakes, tsunamis, volcanic eruptions, and landslides. The lidar dataset that helped jump start the lidar revolution in the Geosciences has received a refresh. Specifically, Stephen DeLong of the USGS has reprocessed this extensive lidar dataset to classify the point cloud data to provide a more readily accessible bare earth point cloud using modern classification tools. Find the data here on OpenTopography.org.
And we're still waiting for a reason to collect the AFTER lidar data....
