The Pittsylvania Caswell Youth Livestock Association’s Show and Sale was first held in 1948. The show was held at the Woodlawn Stables in Chatham Virginia and was called “The Pittsylvania County Junior Dairy Show.” Since its conception, the primary focus of the show has been youth agriculture development. In 1949 the show added livestock to its name and to its classes.
During the 1950’s there were classes named: “Baby Beef Class,” “Heavy Weight Beef Class,” and numerous Dairy breed specific classes (Ayrshire, Guernsey, Jersey, Holstein and Brown Swiss). During the 1960’s the name of the show modified again as it became the “Danville Area Junior Livestock Show and Sale.” This allowed youth from surrounding areas (including Halifax, Henry, and Caswell Counties) to show.
Over the course of the last 75 years, the show has called the following places, “home:” Woodlawn Stables, Danville Pittsylvania County Fairgrounds, Virginia Carolina Livestock Market, and the Olde Dominion Agricultural Complex. Though there have been many changes to the show itself, one thing remains: Promoting Youth Livestock Development.
