Digital History and Cultural Heritage encapsulate invaluable societal narratives, yet scholars and practitioners face challenges in data quality, accessibility, and engagement. Human-AI Interaction (HAI) holds promise to address these challenges, fostering enhanced analysis, discoverability, and storytelling at scale. However, its potential remains largely untapped by the HAI community. This workshop aims to bridge this gap, inviting scholars and practitioners from fields such as human-computer interaction (HCI), artificial intelligence (AI), history, cultural heritage, and GLAMs (galleries, libraries, archives, and museums) to explore innovative HAI methodologies and frameworks tailored to these domains. Through interdisciplinary dialogue, we aim to propose tractable solutions, enriching both the Digital History and Cultural Heritage sectors, as well as the HAI field, while nurturing a fertile ground for historical storytelling and meaningful engagement with our shared past.
This “Past Meets Future” IUI workshop is centered around two main research questions:
How can Human–AI interaction enrich and be enriched from the domains of Digital History and Cultural Heritage?
How can the challenges and datasets inherent in Digital History and Cultural Heritage stimulate innovation in HAI research methodologies and frameworks?
Given the interdisciplinary topic of this workshop and our goals of attracting participants from both computer/information science and humanities fields, we will accept submissions in a wide variety of formats that demonstrate the submitter’s interest in, or related experience with, human–AI interaction and/or digital history and cultural heritage. Acceptable submission formats are:
A new position paper of 2–4 pages concerning current work in human-AI interaction, digital history/cultural heritage, or their intersection. Position papers concerning future work in this space are also welcomed.
A previously published paper relevant to this space.
A link to a digital project or a video demo of the project.
Authors who wish for their position paper to be included as an abstract in the CEUR-WS proceedings for IUI 2024 workshops (see last year’s workshop proceedings) should format their paper using the single-column template.
All submissions should be emailed to pastmeetsfuturehaiworkshop@gmail.com by January 16, 2024 January 21st, 2024 (midnight AoE). Please include “Past Meets Future IUI 2024 Workshop Submission” in the subject line.
The organizers will also serve as the program committee reviewing submissions for the workshop. All submissions will be reviewed single-blind (author names and affiliations should be listed).
Authors will receive acceptance notifications by February 9, 2024. Camera-ready papers will be due March 1, 2024.
At least one author of accepted submissions must register and attend the workshop. At the instruction of the IUI 2024 workshop chairs, this workshop is primarily an in-person event; please contact the organizers to request an exception.
