IoT is implemented into various technologies to enable data exchange and automation. These smart devices include interconnected sensors, communication technologies, and cloud platforms to improve monitoring and automation. IoT in everyday applications help optimize operations and the user experience by collecting and analyzing data.
Ex. Smart thermostats, lighting systems, security systems
Ex. Smartwatches, Pulse Oximeters, Glucose Monitors
Ex. Fleet management, traffic management systems, delivery drones
Smart devices, such as thermostats, provide advanced control over a home's heating and cooling system. Here are some features that help thermostats work in an IoT ecosystem:
Sensors
Detect factors such as temperature and humidity
Collect data on indoor environment and user preferences to optimize operations
Communication Technologies
Connect to the Internet (e.g. Wi-Fi) to communicate with other devices, such as smart home hubs or mobile apps
Cloud Integration
Send collected data to the cloud, where it can analyze user preferences, schedules, and environmental conditions
Use cloud insights to control when the thermostat should preheat or cool the home
Security Risks
IoT devices usually collect sensitive data, making it easy targets for hackers
Ethical Risks (Privacy)
IoT devices such as security cameras can collect personal data without authorization
Cost and Maintenance Risks
Developing IoT infrastructure is costly and needs investments with upgrades in devices or sensors
Legal Risks
IoT systems are required to comply with various regulations such as GDPR, HIPAA, or CCPA
