Founded in 1981, Feeding America Southwest Virginia is a non-profit organization that is known for extensive background coordinating volunteer and corporate efforts to provide food to the hungry of the southwestern region of the state. Their mission is to nourish neighbors, engage community partners, and develop solutions to address food insecurity. Overall, they want to eliminate hunger.
Unfortunately, 37 million people struggle with hunger in the United States, including more than 11 million children. The Southwest Virginia region has been hit hard by plant closings, workforce reductions, limited job opportunities and constraints to job retraining opportunities, which contribute to the rise in hunger.
With 380 partner feeding programs with FASWVA, over $33 million worth of food related products are served to 26 counties and 9 cities in this region.
