Hello! My name is Delaney Kirr, and I am a master's student in the Virginia Tech Department of Geosciences. I work in the VT Chemical Hydrogeology lab under the guidance of Dr. Madeline Schreiber.
My research is focused on the preservation of water quality during the Sustainable Water Initiative for Tomorrow (SWIFT) managed aquifer recharge initiative in the Potomac Aquifer System, Virginia. I study redox-based processes that control the release of contaminants into the aquifer following recharge.
I earned my Bachelor's of Science in Chemistry with a geology minor from William & Mary in 2023. I completed undergraduate research on chemical analyses of mixotrophic and autotrophic algal species with Dr. Amber Hardison at the Virginia Institute of Marine Science.
Before starting my master's, I worked at the U.S. Geological Survey's Reston Biogeochemical Processes in Groundwater Laboratory with the mentorship of Dr. Isabelle Cozzarelli. I gained experience in characterizing the chemistry of natural waters and sampling surface water and groundwater.
I look forward to continuing to use chemistry as a tool to study and protect water resources and environmental health. When I'm not in my lab coat, you can find me hiking, skiing, on the spin bike, or practicing taekwondo!
