Blaise Costa is a Pharmacology Professor at the Virginia College of Osteopathic Medicine (VCOM), with his office and laboratory located at the Virginia Tech Center for One Health Research. The Costa Lab focuses on developing novel therapeutic strategies for neurological and psychiatric disorders, with particular emphasis on drugs targeting NMDA receptors—the same molecular target engaged by the rapid-acting antidepressant ketamine. Building on more than 25 years of research on this target, Costa and colleagues have recently discovered a family of mechanistically distinct, agonist concentration–biased allosteric modulators (BAMs) for NMDA receptors and are currently advancing these compounds through in vitro and in vivo models to support their translation into clinically relevant drug candidates.
