Co-Planning
“The secret to effective planning for co-teaching is to realize that face face-to face planning should be just a single component of the process.”

Effective co-teaching isn't possible without co-planning; it just can't happen. Ensuring that all the needs of your students are met takes the expertise of each partner to thoughtfully prepare for effective instruction. Time, roles, data and engagement are essential components to successful co-planning. #1- From the start, come to consensus on when you will set time aside to co-plan. If you're fortunate to have common co-planning time in your schedule, don't waste a minute of it by making an agenda and sticking to it. If you don't, be creative to find what works for you both and go electronic! Google docs, Planbook.com and other platforms allow you both access to develop and edit plans that work. #2- Build on your strengths as experts in the curriculum standards & pacing (Gen Ed) and in specially designed instruction to meet the needs of students with IEP's (Sp Ed). Two heads are better than one! #3- Let your data drive your instruction by using formative and summative assessments to ensure that you are not only teaching engaging lessons, but that the students are learning. #4- plan for a variety of co-teaching approaches to meet the learning needs of ALL your students through small group and whole group instruction. This Co-Planning Checklist will set you up for success!
